Can Christmas Puddings be Frozen?

Jenkins and Hustwit Christmas puddings are produced from traditional family recipes, handmade and hand wrapped by our Yorkshire based bakery team.  Our puddings come with a best before of at least a year, (and can last well beyond), which in our humble opinion is long enough to negate the need to freeze.

Saying this J & H Puddings can be frozen and kept for up to 6 months once steamed if wrapped and placed inside a sealed container in the freezer. They will require being completely defrosted, thawing for around 24hrs, before re steaming/heating.

How long does Christmas pudding last?

Your Christmas pudding will be at its best if consumed within a couple of hours of steaming/heating, and always tastier when warm (particularly when served with brandy butter or warm brandy poured over it).

It will keep in the fridge for a couple of days if you don’t manage to get through the whole pudd on Christmas day.

How to re-heat a Christmas Pudding?

We find the best way to heat a Christmas pudding is to steam it in a pan but it can also be heated using a microwave: Populate with cooking instructions

Cooking Instructions: (These instructions are given as a guide). Please ensure that the product is piping hot throughout before serving.

To Steam:

  1. Remove all outer packaging, Remove lid and place loosely on the bowl.
  2. Fill the pan with water to half the height of the basin.
  3. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 hour
  4. Ensure water does not enter the pudding. Do not allow the pan to boil dry.

To Microwave: From ambient (Please refer to your appliances user manual for power settings)

  1. Remove outer packaging. Remove lid and place loosely on the bowl.
  2. Heat on full power for 2 minutes
  3. Leave to stand for 2 minutes

What coins can you put in a Christmas Pudding?

Christmas Puddings became as we are to know them today in around the Victorian era, hence our Victorian Christmas puddings. It became a tradition to place a silver coin, (or other items dependant on the purveyor’s persuasion) within the mix, usually a sixpence, (similar to a 5 pence piece in size), and it was thought that whoever found the coin in their portion of pudd, would enjoy good luck and prosperity in the coming year.

Sadly we decided due to the possibility of our customers choking on an unexpected object in their desert it was one tradition that we would have to leave to the Victorians.

Do Christmas Puddings have Alcohol in them?

Our puddings all have alcohol in them Brandy is a staple of the traditional pudd, and nothing warms the soul more than a Rich Christmas pudding doused in flaming Brandy.

How do you store Christmas Pudding?

Store your Pudding at ambient temperature, preferably a cool area away from direct sunlight as this will help preserve the pudding and extend its life span. Our puddings like our fruitcake are more flavoursome and aromatic as they mature.

What Sauce to serve with Christmas Pudding?

We recommend serving your Christmas pudding with a healthy helping of brandy butter melting across the top, although double cream, ice cream, warm brandy, icing sugar, Rum butter, and even custard are all ways to enhance to the traditional Christmas pudding. ‘Let us know your own favourites and secret recipes’.

How to Light a Christmas pudding?

To add the wow factor to any Christmas dessert table is to have a flaming Christmas pudding. To achieve this heat some brandy in a saucepan until warm, then carefully light the brandy either directly in the saucepan and pour generously over the pudding or alternatively use a large ladle for a more aesthetically traditional look.
